Angelo Kortyka - Educator, Designer, and Performer
Angelo Kortyka is a band director and freelance tubist in the Cleveland area. He has taught at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, OH since 2013, where he directs the Marching Band, Concert Bands, Jazz Bands, and teaches music theory and technology.
As a band director, Mr. Kortyka has consistently directed the St. Edward Marching Band to superior ratings at the state level for 8 of the last 10 years. The concert program began attending adjudicated events and has received superior ratings at two Dixie Classic Festivals and a few times at local state events. The Jazz program has also increased in activity with performances at the Lakeland Jazz Fest, Tri-C High School Jazz Fest, Brothers Lounge, Bop Stop, and Blu Jazz Akron.
On Tuba and Euphonium, Mr. Kortyka occasionally performs with Cleveland Winds and Da Land Brass Band. He is also a member of the 2023 DCA Corps, Rogues Hollow Regiment. Past college teaching positions include Adjunct Tuba Professor- Xavier University, Sul Ross State University, and Lee University. He has performed with the Patriot Band of Elyria, the Jericho Brass Band, The Chattanooga Symphony, Chattanooga Tuba-Euphoniuim Quartet, Moccasin Brass Quintet, Cincinnati Brass Band, Dayton Philharmonic Concert Band, Lebanon (OH) Symphony, Hofbrau Haus Band, Cincinnati Bier Band, Revolution Brass Band, C.W.R.U. Symphonic Band, the Cleveland Winds and numerous community bands. As a soloist, Mr. Kortyka has performed guest recitals at University of Texas- Permian Basin, Sul Ross State University, Xavier University, and Tennessee Technological University, and was runner-up in the 2004 Potomac Tuba Euphonium Competition. He has been on several recordings, most notably the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble's 40th anniversary CD, "Legacy". Mr. Kortyka has studied with R. Winston Morris, Timothy Northcut, Anthony Kniffen, Sam Green, Mike Thornton, Gary Adams, and Tucker Jolley. He has also had the opportunity to perform for Sasha Johnson, Ron Bishop, Velvet Brown, Alessandro Fossi, and David Porter.
Mr. Kortyka is also an accomplished drill writer for competitive marching bands and corps-style show bands. He is also available for consulting and clinics for your marching band season.
